Is Cotton Mul Good for Newborns? A Gentle Guide to Muslin Baby Clothes

If you've shopped for baby clothes, you've probably seen the word muslin, or mul for short. It's one of the first fabrics many parents reach for, and for good reason. Here's a plain guide to what it is and whether it's right for your newborn.
What is cotton mul?
Cotton mul is a light, loosely woven plain-weave cotton. The open weave lets air move through the fabric, and the fine yarn makes it feel soft from the very first wear. It has been woven for centuries, and it's still a go-to cloth for newborn wraps and first clothes.
Why parents choose mul for newborns
- Breathable. Air moves through the weave, which helps babies stay comfortable when it's warm or when they're bundled up indoors.
- Soft on new skin. Mul has no stiff finish, and it gets softer with every wash.
- Light. It's easy to layer under a sleeper or a knit in a Canadian winter, and it can be worn on its own in summer.
- Natural fibre. At Chiku Chums we use 100% cotton, or at least 95% cotton, so there's very little synthetic content against the skin.
What to look for
Not all muslin is the same. When you're comparing baby clothes, check:
- Fibre content. Look for 100% cotton or close to it on the label.
- Fastenings. Snaps should sit flat and close firmly. Envelope necks make it easier to dress a wriggly baby.
- Seams. Flat, soft seams are kinder to skin than thick overlocked edges.
- Dyes. Undyed or gently dyed cloth is a simple choice for the first months.
A note on sleep
Mul is lovely for day wear and layering. For sleep, follow Health Canada's safe sleep advice, and choose snug-fitting sleepwear made for sleeping. Keep loose blankets out of the crib.
How to care for mul
- Wash before the first wear, in cool or warm water.
- Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent.
- Line dry or tumble dry on low. Mul crinkles a little; that's part of its charm.
- Skip fabric softener. Mul softens on its own.
So, is it good for newborns?
For most families, yes. Cotton mul is light, breathable and gentle, which makes it a natural first fabric. Our Cotton Mul Bodysuit is cut from undyed mul with wooden snaps, in sizes 0–3M to 18–24M. You can see the whole Newborn 0–2 collection here.
